Mean social media girl was the energy Adelaide venues chose when they trolled the now-shuttered Precinct Nightclub. Amid the party spot’s rent-induced closure, a meme war broke out on rivals’ social media channels.
Business was brutal for CBD’s Precinct Nightclub, which closed its doors last month due to outstanding rent. But rival clubs Red Square and Zhivago quickly transformed Precinct’s closure into mocking marketing strategies.
Memes of a chuffed man squatting near a tombstone with Precinct’s logo celebrated the club’s ‘funeral’ and advertised drink promotions.
“Tonight we pay our respects, with $3 vodkas ‘til 12am. To any staff that hadn’t already left, feel free to apply for work with us here” Red Square’s post read. Zhivago continued the trolling session by writing “Red Square and I are currently busy attending a funeral atm. See you all tonight from 9pm.”
Multi-genre nightclub Dog and Duck drew a line in the sand and slammed Red Square for showing “a complete disregard for all the staff who lost their jobs.”
“We would like to think patrons who loved Precinct would be as upset as the ex Precinct staff to see this kind of post.”
Precinct Nightclub’s owners weren’t impressed by the memes and issued a statement saying they are saddened that “a venue would make fun of the fact our staff are now unemployed.”
“We would like to thank (fellow CBD venue) Dog and Duck for showing some respect in a very hard time for a lot of people. I guess all the staff and DJs will be at Dogs tonight.”
Patrons weren’t too happy about the memes either. While one user called Precinct Nightclub one of “the best clubs in Adelaide,” some called out Red Square, saying “if only it was them were shutting their doors for good.”
According to The Adelaide Advertiser, hip-hop club Precinct owed $37,786.07 in outstanding rent.
