How Radion became a staple music temple in Amsterdam

In 2014, Radion’s owner Frits Zanen laid out a plan for a cultural and artistic hub in Amsterdam’s west. The location Zanen picked for its beat-fueled brainchild – though seemingly odd – fits the criteria of a raw and undisguised setting perfect for bringing the city’s creative minds together.

Radion took over a dental clinic in Amsterdam’s former Academic Center for Dentistry. The establishment is now divided into entertainment and nightlife spots like The Creativity Project, a visual art center.

The multi-faceted venue quickly grew in size and effect, as word about its iconic clubbing nights took Amsterdam by storm.

As if its reputation wasn’t enough, Radion Amsterdam received an affirmative nod from the city’s authorities and was granted a 24-hour license in 2015.

Radion found its home in an equally influential location

Nieuw Sloten – where Radion resides – is a neighborhood specifically built in 1990 to host the 1992 Summer Olympics.

When their ambitions failed and the 1992 Summer Olympics didn’t take place in Nieuw Sloten anymore, villagers fought long and hard to maintain the older part of the area, Sloten, and preserve the acres of land.

The renovations for the lusted-after event took place regardless, but the neighborhood remained green and luscious amid the concrete jungle.

The Amsterdam venue is a nightlife maze

Radion Amsterdam’s passion for all that is contemporary is unencumbered – and its broad-ranging territory stands testament to it.

A nightclub, restaurant, two terraces, exhibition space, and a cinema… need we say more? Radion can host up to 1,500 club-goers at any given moment with its easily accessible and connected five areas. Make sure to sharpen your spatial awareness because you are bound to be lost in space, time, and music.

Though its raves are all the hype, Radion’s setting takes the cake. The nightclub is in a bunker-like room spread over two floors, giving off serious warehouse energy.

With the DJ booth sitting majestically in the heart of the club, it feels as though the artists are swimming in a sea of ravers and entranced dancers.

Minimal decorations enhance the crowd’s energy, and flickering colorful lighting rigs barely illuminate the main room. Radion aims to bring the focus onto the artists and off the dancers, making its ambiance fully encapsulating and rave-worthy.

With a VOID Acoustics sound system engineered with detail to the area and volume of clubbers, Radion strikes a balance between depth and clarity. We try not to get technical, but let’s geek it out for a moment.

Though the audio equipment works for large arenas, Radion focused on harnessing the bombardment of sounds without compromising the crisp output.

Radion Amsterdam has an enviable roster of artists

Just like the best things in life, the legendary Amsterdam nightclub focuses on house and techno beats, with subgenres like acid making it into the mix. Bringing veteran and up-and-coming music heroes to the forefront, Radion doesn’t shy away from being playful with its lineup.

From resident DJs like DJ Bone, Jordan CGZ, and JP Enfant to guest artists like Laurent Garnier, Matrixxman, and Hiroko Yamamura, your weekends are locked and loaded with uninterrupted entertainment.

The Amsterdam club has got your needs covered

With a restaurant and cafe offering vegan options and unlimited drinks, you can snack and munch before the weekend-long raves.

The bar operates on a token system, so get the hang of it before the madness begins and top up before the bar gets too crowded.

Tickets at the much-beloved Radion range from €15-20, which is only fair considering the long lineups and killer setlists.

If you’re hoping to get some VIP treatment, we suggest you find an alternative because Radion Amsterdam is as raw and rugged as it gets.

Why Radion Amsterdam is so special

From the outside, many wouldn’t gauge Radion’s larger-than-life hold.

Still, the Amsterdam venue consistently hosts lectures, dance events, art installations, and movie showings, bridging the gap between nightlife and creative endeavors.

Radion takes pride in its heavily graffitied exterior and always seeks ways to showcase its interest in varied art forms, solidifying its perspective on merging disciplines and ideas.

Loyal to its multi-disciplinary ethos, the Amsterdam club faced the COVID-19 aftermath by joining a collaborative project bonding over 450 clubs worldwide to showcase talents during the onset of the pandemic.

The United We Stream project started in Berlin as a fundraising event and later garnered global recognition. Radion has proven its ethos time and time again – the community is the fuel that runs the engine of creativity.

Radion has eyes and ears everywhere

Part of ADE shenanigans since 2019, Radion Amsterdam demonstrates its iconic status in the nightlife industry.

In the ADE 2022 edition, Radion was the location for five days of festival fun, holding recurring events from the 19th to the 23rd of October, with artists like Anastasia Kristensen performing on the final hurrah. In 2019, Radion and ADE brought artists like Peggy Gou and Fafi Abdel Nour.

Though now an indispensable element of Amsterdam’s nightlife, Radion was a dental clinic that served primarily as offices. We can only imagine the difference in screams from dental drills to heart-thumping beat drops.
